Sodium hyaluronate is a derivative of hyaluronic acid and shares many of its beneficial properties. Sodium hyaluronate is a humectant, lubricant, and hypo-osmotic. This hydrophilic polymer plays an important role in corneal wound healing as it promotes corneal epithelial repair and helps control localized inflammation. Sodium hyaluronate is also a lubricant with flow and deformation characteristics similar to those of the tear aqueous layer. Additionally, it reduces mucous strands in tears and is better at lowering tear osmolarity than glycerin.
